Nebuchadnezzar's grandson is now king of Babylon. And like his grandfather Belshazzar before him, he is dealt with by God because of his arrogance. There is a hand that is seen writing "MENE, MENE, TEKEL, UPHARSIN" on the wall. This is where the phrase, "You can see the writing on the wall" came from.

Daniel interprets the words that were written by the hand:

  • MENE, MENE = God has numbered your kingdom and finished it.
  • TEKEL = You have been weighed in the balances, and found wanting.
  • PERES (the singular of UPHARSIN) = Your kingdom has been divided, and given to the Medes and Persians.
